Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS)

Fibromyalgia is associated with widespread pain, muscle aches, stiffness, weakness, and unexplained fatigue. Fibromyalgia is a concern for many who live and work in Federal Way. It is estimated that fibromyalgia affects more than 5 million Americans, the majority of them women.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) states,

"Fibromyalgia is another pain condition frequently seen by health care providers, and one in which there often is no universally effective treatment. Studies have found that up to 91 percent of people with fibromyalgia use some form of [complimentary or alternative medicine], and up to 75 percent use massage therapy."

Although research is limited, and each person’s treatment response is unique, indications are that massage therapy can bring relief from fibromyalgia symptoms, including:

  • Reduced pain
  • Improved quality of life
  • Decreased anxiety

  • Decreased stiffness
  • Decreased fatigue
  • Improved health status
  • Improved relaxation

Several massage techniques may be used for fibromyalgia massage in our Federal Way massage therapy center depending on the patient's preferences and symptoms.

  • Massage which emphasizes circulation. Improved circulation may reduce pain and stiffness. This deep pressure massage may relieve muscle pain and tension.
  • Pressure point massage targets pressure points in the knuckles, fingers, and hands to stimulate the body to relax, resulting in pain relief. Pressure point massage does not include direct contact with the muscles or joints, areas that may be painful.
  • Reflexology is another massage with avoids painful muscles and joints. Relaxation, tension release, and circulation are promoted throughout the body by massaging specific points on the hands and feet.

Massage is an all-natural, holistic, time-proven therapy for reducing pain, promoting healing, and increasing well-being.
